When calculating the cost of a safari in Kenya, the first thing you need to know is that Kenya, and East Africa in general, is not as cheap as you might assume.

In fact, a safari in Kenya can be very expensive indeed and that’s not even for a luxury experience.

What affects the safari price in Kenya?

The main factors which affect your Kenya safari cost are:

  • Time of Year
  • Number of people
  • Mode of Getting Around
  • Choice of Accommodation
  • Optional extras e.g hot air balloon ride

Seasons

If you are on a tight budget, then it is best to avoid the peak season months. The trade-off here is that you will not get to witness a Mara River crossing and you may have to work a little harder for your game sightings. The upside of traveling off-peak is the better safari deals available and the reduced crowds.

The high safari season means greater demand, which translates to reduced availability, and so higher prices.

High season (July-September & Christmas-February) will always cost the most, and low season (March-April & November) will of course cost the least.

The difference in price between the two periods can be as much as 50% for accommodation. So, it goes without saying that going on safari in the low (green) season saves you a lot of cash.
